Environmental Campaign

I decided to do my environmental campaign on WWF Tiger Challenge. With our society evolving everything we do now is digital technology and I feel like the Tiger challenge is the perfect example!

http://run4tiger.com

The tiger challenge is a way to show what kind of danger humans put such an endangered species in. I believe this campaign has been doing so well because of the digital technology it has, it is connected to social media life Facebook and twitter and the main page even challenges the individual looking at the page to start the challenge with every other person trying to help save these endangered species.

This tiger challenge connects to multiple running/exercise apps that will track how many miles the person is running and the goal is to run just as much as the tiger that The WWF is tracking, the individual is supposed to compete with the tiger. It also shows the rating of the people doing the challenge against the tiger, and if the runner loses against the tiger for an amount Kilometers that they ran they have to donate. It is all over the world, you can race against people in Russia!

I believe this campaign an AMAZING way to bring awareness about a cause that most people don't know about, using social media and working out in one is the perfect way to get a hold of an era of time where everything is done online. Besides reaching out to people online they also make it incredibly easy, by downloading a free app or even using an app that is already on a smart phone. This helps people exercise to improve their own health and donate to improve and keep another form of life from being extinct.

Product Fails- Orbitz Soda 1996- 1997

The product I chose was Orbitz Soda. I remember being about five years old and seeing this new drink all of my older cousins where drinking! It looked like a lava lamp and had the coolest little things floating inside of them, they even had different color ones. But, what I do remember most is how disappointed they where when they tried these cool looking drinks.
This drink hit the shelves in 1996 and within only a year it was gone! Could it really be that horrible?! Yes! Many consumers compared this drink to cough syrup.
This drink had been marketed as a drink you could eat and drink, the little balls in the drink just floated around in the bottle. It did bring some buyers who bought the drink in bulk because since it was not carbonated it could be stored for long periods of time.
I believed that this product failed because it was so incredibly different! People like products they know and if they see something different that they don't find use to it I believe it will fail. For example, this drink had a different texture and the consumer market was not ready for a "chewable" drink. Unfortunately, other than the drink not being good itself the chewy balls inside of it weren't incredibly appetizing either.
To start off perception ruined their product, the design and marketing was a lot better than what the drink had to offer. Most people who drank this drink thought it was disgusting, it was related to so many different unfortunate tastes that the consumer just did not want the drink again. Unfortunately for the company bad news gets around faster than good news. When a consumer tastes something, experiences anything negative they have the urge to just make sure the word gets around so that other people don't have to deal with what they did, and thats what happened with this product. The word spread incredibly fast and unfortunately it wasn't to this products favor.
When you see the way this bottle is designed is targeted to children, children are the perfect target audience for quirky things with colors, and while it worked and got their attention what the company forgot was that kids aren't the boss. Parents run everything in kids lives, when parents saw that this drink was completely unhealthy and the definition of artificial and they didn't have knowledge on what was in the drink they put a halt on their children drinking these drinks.
When Parents don't know what is in a product or how much artificial products they want their children drinking it causes confusion and as a consumer when I am confused about a product I make sure to stray from that product, which I believe was their biggest downfall, confusing their consumers caused them to turn a product with potential to a product fail. Fortunately for the company their product can still be bought on Ebay.

Television Show- Scandal

I decided to choose the show Scandal. I chose this show because of the reason that the main character, Olivia Pope is and African American woman. This woman shows that being a colored woman doesn't mean that a person cannot succeed. She is a woman who owns her own company saving other people from their problems and also is one of the most important people in the White House, she does crisis managment for the White House.

I believe this show is a perfect example of equality within all races and gender. Gender diversity is everywhere, as previously stated the main character is a successful woman who worked hard to get where it was that she wanted to be. She works in the White House, hand in hand with all the staff in the facility. She is known everywhere. On the other hand it also shows what the "First Lady" in the show does. This show explains and shows how just because she is the First Lady she doesn't just sit at home, clean, raise their kids, and be the presidents arm candy. I believe this show is incredibly empowering it shows so many powerful woman in it, and color never comes into play, everyone is equally as successful, hard working and beautiful. I feel like it gives hope to other women, more like empowerment.
The men in this show are just as successful as the women. Obviously, this show is based off the most powerful man in this country, the president. The men in this show aren't above the women or in the shadow of the women they are all in equal position with them. It is a great show that shows powerful people of all races and gender, versatility is everything in this show. This show is important for our media because it brings light to all races, it shows that you don't have to be an only race to be successful and powerful.

I believe that in this show the stereotypes are their but very subtle. When it comes racial stereotyping the only one I have really seen was an episode where a young African American man was shot by a Caucasian cop because the cop assumed he was armed with a knife and was going to attack. Different scenarios that the main character, Olivia has to fix are the only big kind of racial stereotyping that the show has. Upon the main cast and their lives interacting with one another the racial stereotyping is almost non existent, amongst them what seems to be their problem is power. I believe gender stereotyping happens a lot amongst the president and Olivia, the two main characters. Olivia is made to seem as she gives up so much for her relationship with Fitz because she is the woman, and because he is a man he is allowed to have a wife and a mistress. He is made to seem as everything he does is perfect because he is a man, while Olivia has to tip toe around his life to make sure he is fine. I believe that this goes back to the women having to stay home and taking care of children while the man goes to work, or that the woman has to give up everything and follow her man, through sickness, infidelity, and everything and anything he wants. It is wrong and Olivia is a strong woman and has stood up to him to tell him she isn't going to adjust everything for someone who won't give her the same which I believe is the pride and strength every woman should have. Being an independent woman is what she tries to portray but slowly falls back to the stereotypical woman following her man.

Day In The Life

A Day In The Life

1.  Gender Split- I believe this ad is for men and women, I see it attracting individuals who like living a lavish life
2. Age- I believe age is between 25-35
3. Marital Status- I believe the marital status would be single but in a relationship.
4. Job- The job of these people would have to be at a business firm that involves them to travel around the country.
5. Car- I see the consumers driving a Mercedes or a Bentley.
6. Urban/Rural- This consumer is definitely from an Urban area.
7. Grocery Shopping- They definitely shop at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.
8. Favorite Clothing Brands- Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Michael Khors, Calvin Klein
9. Favorite Music- I believe the man and woman would be more into pop and mainstream radio music the most.
10. Favorite Movie- Woman; Sex and The City Male; Something more full of action like Fast And The Furious or Lethal Weapon.
11. TV- I see these individuals as people who don't really have the opportunity to watch TV because they are extremely focused on work.
12. Alcoholic Drink- Woman; Martini  Man; Scotch on the rocks.
13. Non-Alcoholic Drink- Woman; Sparkling Water   Man; Coca Cola
14. Favorite Type of Eatery- I believe for both man and woman they would like going somewhere where they can meet the head chef and eat a filet Mignon.
15. Fragrance- For the woman I see her wearing a high end perfume like Chanel. For the man I would see him wearing something like Burberry.
16. Sporting Activity- I believe that the woman would have played sports at a young age but nothing as an adult. I believe that the man is into polo or swimming.
17. Vacation Destination- I believe both the man and the woman would travel somewhere tropical or Paris, with significant others or even alone.
18. Dog or Cat- I believe both the man and the woman are dog people. The woman would have a small Yorkie and the man would be seen with a big type of dog like a Labrador.
19. Kids Name- I believe they would name their daughter something that is believed to be "high" like Chanel and a boy would be James or Maximus.
20. Mac or PC- Mac, because I feel like in our society Macs are held on a more prestige level than PC's.
I believe a day in the life of the consumer would be incredibly fast pace! I see it as the man and woman live a very similar life. They are extremely invested in their job and have
to travel for it, they are the apidimi of a business person! When they travel or are on vacation they have a significant other who is committed but also but their first love is definitely their job.
They see their family for holidays only and do not want to have kids until their career is completely set. Their life is planned to the tee.

Love and Hate

Growing up I was always surrounded by advertisements, it always attracted me. When I saw something that caught my eye I felt that I had to go and buy the product or even watch the movie! I was always so drawn to the way different agencies used new and improved products to draw in the attention of consumers, I never thought that I was going to able to attend school and learn about advertising.
I love how as a consumer you can analyze an ad and understand what it was they where trying to tell, but at the same time analyzing an ad may not be as easy as what meets the eye. There could be something as simple as the color of an ad to make it targeted to a woman. But, like a Victoria Secret ad it is advertised to a woman and a man. As a consumer you have to analyze the ad to really see that it is also advertised towards a man. I love the creativity that some ads have, my favorite ad would have to be of a pole that has a shadow of a tree and it says, "Nothing can replace a tree". I believe this ad isn't just creative but it is also informative, which is what I love about advertising, you never know what to expect. Creativity is everything!

What I really don't like about advertising are some of the individuals that work behind the scenes, some people still use a lot of racism in their work. They don't realize how much we have come as a whole and still think it's okay to belittle different races to get their point around. For example, when I see an ad like the one below it breaks my heart! It is saying that because the mom is African American there is a big possibility that she is going to abort the child. When in reality statistics show that African American are not the women who have the highest abortions, the highest rated women to have abortions are Caucasian women. Just because a woman is black doesn't mean her unborn child is in danger.

Another thing I dislike about advertising is how sometimes they make the models in ads seem very unattainable to the average person, the everyday mom, and student. Unfortunately, young girls see these ads and feel pressured to look just like them and when they can't seem to meet these standards they unfortunately feel like they aren't up to societies standards.

Other than that I find advertising incredibly intriguing and can't wait to keep learning about what goes into the everyday kind of advertising!

Gender Stereotyping- Sex Sells

Gender stereotyping seems to be everywhere, even where we least expect it. But, as I was searching the internet and seeing ads in magazines I noticed that the biggest stereotyping I had seen was how women have to be a sex symbol. The woman always has to either be a house wife, a mother, or doing things for her man. Like reported in the article, Sexism in Advertising "Women have always been expected to fill specific gender roles as the cleaning, cooking, or child-bearing sex machine".
Being a mother to a young girl and my moms only daughter I have had to experience this myself. I'm a mom, a wife, a daughter, student, and employee so sometimes I believe that I am allowed to go out and have some fun with my friends, unfortunately my mother doesn't think so. She believes that if my home isn't spotless and my husband isn't on my arm I shouldn't be aloud to go out. She sees me in an outfit she doesn't approve of and instantly starts complaining, she makes it very clear that if I am going to walk around in something "inappropriate" it should be in my home. I stand my ground with her and let her know that I do whatever I please because I can, luckily my husband is extremely supportive and doesn't put me in a box because I am a woman. I am a housewife and he is a househusband, I take care of my daughter and he takes care of his daughter, I cook, he cooks, we are a team regardless of stereotypes.
I would have to say that even though in todays society there are many different ads that promote the "normal" woman or "full figure" woman it is still secretly everywhere, when a "full figure" woman pops up in an ad like Torrid consumers don't automatically think sexy, they say "Oh, she's pretty for a bigger girl".  A woman needs to be promoting sex, wether in the way her eyes are, to her stance, so that people are attracted to what is being sold. A perfect example would have to be underwear ads and commercials. For example, first we have Victoria Secret models trying to advertise that no matter what kind of body a person has they are beautiful. Of course women see them and see the sex they radiate and think let me go and buy this under wear so that I can look like that, but in reality "if you flip through a VS catalog it becomes very apparent that their models don’t even wear their bras right." A professional bra fitter stated in her article.
So because of that ten women where very disappointed in the fact that there was minimal body versatility shown in the Victoria Secret ad and wanted to show them what the "perfect" body really is. It is every single woman's body.

Advertising should make women feel like they are beautiful even if they don't look like sex on a stick. Women are not just sex, and aren't here just to please their man, they are here to empower themselves and even though our society is slowly changing, some advertisers need to forget that sex sells and remember that everyday women want to be seen and heard to not pushed to the side. As in the ads below it shows how even in early advertising they made sure women showed some skin to attract individuals to the product and overtime theres just less and less close involved. From an early age people realized that sexuality in a woman is everything, and would definitely raise their products sales.
